SE Ranking Review (2026): Solid Data, One Real Catch

Verdict: The Keyword Research data is genuinely specific and useful, and the free trial itself is honest about requiring no card - but the Site Audit only gives you issue counts, not the actual pages, until you pay, and personal Gmail addresses are flatly rejected at signup.

We signed up for SE Ranking’s 14-day free trial and pointed it at this site’s real domain, solostacklab.net, to see how a rank-tracking and audit tool performs on a niche affiliate site that’s barely a month old.

The signup wouldn’t accept our business Gmail

SE Ranking’s signup page states clearly: “No credit card required.” That held up — but the form also demands a “work email” and flatly rejected [email protected] with the message “Use your work email address ([email protected]) to continue,” graying out the submit button entirely. Clearing the browser cache didn’t help, because this wasn’t a caching issue — the form genuinely blocks any Gmail-style address, business or personal.

We worked around it by setting up Cloudflare’s free Email Routing on our own domain — creating [email protected], forwarded straight to our existing Gmail inbox, at no cost and confirmed to be a permanent free feature, not a trial. That address passed instantly. If you’re testing this yourself and don’t already have a domain email set up, budget ten extra minutes for this step — it’s a real barrier, not a one-off glitch.

The onboarding defaults to your local settings, not your audience’s

After signup, the “Enter your website details” step pre-filled Country as Japan and language as 日本語, even though this site targets a US/global English-speaking audience. Worth catching before you launch tracking, since search-visibility data is region-specific — a mistake here quietly tracks the wrong market. We corrected both fields (and the currency display, which also defaulted to JPY) to United States / English / USD before proceeding.

The “potential competitors” auto-suggested at setup (tablework.io, one-empire.com, pancake.ai, arcva.app, duet.so) were names we didn’t recognize and couldn’t identify as genuine competitors in this niche — we skipped selecting any of them rather than track irrelevant sites.

What the dashboard shows for a brand-new site: mostly nothing, which is expected

Once the project was live, the main Overview showed 0% search visibility, “Data is not found” for organic traffic and keywords, and 0 referring domains. This isn’t a tool failure — it’s an accurate reflection of a domain that’s a few weeks old with almost no backlinks or indexed history yet. Worth knowing going in: SE Ranking (like most rank trackers) is built to show progress over time on an established site, not to produce much of anything on day one.

Keyword Research: genuinely specific, usable data

The Keyword Research tool was the strongest part of the trial. Searching “programmatic seo” returned a Difficulty score of 40/100 (“Doable”), a monthly search volume of 590, CPC of $3.12, and — more usefully — the actual URLs currently ranking for it, including specific pages from Reddit, Semrush’s blog, Zapier’s blog, and HubSpot’s blog, each with their own traffic-cost estimate. That’s concrete competitive intelligence, comparable in usefulness to what we found valuable in Frase’s competitor-structure pulls.

Site Audit: the summary is free, the actual findings are not

We ran a full Website Audit against solostacklab.net. The top-level numbers were informative on their own: Health Score 86/100 (SE Ranking’s own “Recommended” baseline is 90+), 35 total issues (6 errors, 14 warnings, 15 notices), and — notably — “Pages in Google: 1.” That last figure independently confirms something we’d already suspected from Google Search Console: this domain’s indexing is still catching up, weeks after the DNS switch to the custom domain.

Further down the same report, the Domain Metrics panel confirmed “Pages in Google: 1.”

Here’s the catch: clicking into the Issue Report to see which pages had the 6 errors and 14 warnings — the part that actually tells you what to fix — showed every single issue’s detail rows replaced with “Available by subscription” and an “UNLOCK AUDIT” button. You get the category and the count (“No inbound links: 6,” “Internal links to 3XX redirect pages: 7”) but not one actual URL. This is the same shape of paywall we found in Surfer SEO’s Auto-Optimize button: the free trial shows you enough to know there’s a problem, but not enough to act on it.

AI Search tracking: brand new, and the labeling is easy to misread

SE Ranking recently added an “AI Search” tracker that monitors whether your site is mentioned or linked in ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews, and similar answers — the same category of feature we liked in Frase’s AI-citation panel. We added ChatGPT as a tracked engine and three real prompts our audience might ask (“best programmatic seo tools for solo builders,” “make vs n8n for automation,” “how to build an ai content pipeline for an affiliate site”).

Result: 0% mention presence and 0% link presence across all three prompts — expected, since the domain has no real search footprint yet. But the dashboard also displayed “Sources Presence: 100%” in a large, equally weighted stat tile right next to the 0% figures. Read quickly, that looks like a win. It isn’t: it means 100% of the AI answers had source links to something, not that any of those sources were us. Every individual prompt row showed a plain “—” for both Mention and Link. If you’re scanning this dashboard fast, it’s easy to misread “Sources Presence” as your own visibility metric.

Bottom line

SE Ranking’s Keyword Research is real, specific, and immediately useful — on par with what we valued in Frase’s research stage. The Site Audit’s summary numbers are informative even for a brand-new site, and the “Pages in Google: 1” figure was a genuinely useful independent data point. But two things need clear eyes going in: the signup form rejects any Gmail address (budget time for a domain-email workaround if you don’t have one already), and the audit’s actual page-level findings — the part you’d need to fix anything — are paywalled behind “Available by subscription” on the free trial. Use the 14 days for keyword research and the top-line health check; don’t expect an actionable to-do list without upgrading.
